ELEM – Rocking for Nepal

Shashank K., Reporter

Music is great. It helps us relax, helps us study, helps with a lot of things.

But what if Music could help people in need? A concert is in the works by our own classmates, members of the band, ELEM, who decided to ask this very question.

I was able to meet up with one of the band members, Leandro, for some questions.

QQ: What is ELEM?

“ELEM is the name of our band. Why is it called ELEM? It’s a puzzle or a riddle if you will. ELEM was created by me and Marko a couple years back.”

QQ: Who performs in ELEM?

“Marko, Jamin and I, and occasionally we have other guest performers. So far we have played with Bella, Ren, Faith, Aaron and a couple more.

QQ: When did it get started?

“I would say 8th grade was the start of the band. I asked Marko if he played any instruments. From this moment on I respected Marko. We then started playing in music class, our first song was Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes. Then we recruited Jamin since we needed another guitar, I moved to the bass since there was no one else who played the bass. After that the 4th member of Elem arrived. His name was Pedro, Mexican guy. This was the peak of Elem, we played several songs since we had the perfect number of instruments, 2 guitars, a bass, and drums. Here we played our best song, Reptilia by The Strokes, this is when we decided that we should stick together to make a band. After a year Pedro moved back to Mexico and Jamin quit the band. This was a bad moment for Elem. Me and Marko tried to keep playing but we started to grow apart in terms of creative decisions. Eventually we played with Jamin again and we developed a system in order to keep everyone happy. We all choose a song and play it, no matter what we might be feeling, this way everybody gets to play at least one song we each like.”

QQ: The main question, the concert that is being planned. Could you tell us more about it?

“We are organizing a concert for the 15th of April. We will play several songs, the important thing about this concert is that it is a concert for Nepal. There will be donation boxes and the entrance fee for the concert is 20SEK, all of this which go to the Nepal Project.”

QQ: That is a very noble cause. What motivated you to help these people?

“I just wanted to use my talent to help people.”

We at the Quirky Quibbler wish ELEM luck for their concert, and hope that they are able to help people in Nepal who require aid. If you have questions about this concert, or would like to help in any way, talk to Leandro ([email protected]) or Marko ([email protected]).

Otherwise, see you on Friday, 15th of April in the main building auditorium, 5 – 6.30pm.
