MUN – New York
June 1, 2016
I am very glad that I chose to go to the conference in New York. Personally, I have never been to conference or America before so this was all very exciting for me. The conference was with a large group of people that I had never met before from all over the world. This made it very intimidating, however, with the preparation done in Sweden in the MUN class with Mrs. Ahl and Ms. Guyo we felt well prepared.
I was placed in the FAO (food and agricultural organisation) committee with the task or working out how to feed 9 billion people by 2050. My committee had over 40 countries attending and we were in a very large room. The feeling and the excitement of being able to change the world when you are only 16 is thrilling. Making international friends is just a bonus.
We started of the 2 day conference with an opening ceremony at the UN centre. The Chair’s were polite and the delegates were willing to put their heads together to come up with one resolution. At the end of the day 2, we all had created 4 equally creative resolutions. Two out of 4 resolutions passed and 1 out of those 2 resolutions was from our block of 14 countries. We all combined efforts to produce a resolution that 2/3 of the committee had voted for. We then had our closing ceremony at the UN Headquarters where words were spoken and awards were handed out.
Of course when traveling to New York we spent around 2 days in the city. We went to the iconic sites like the Whitney museum with a beautiful modern art exhibition, Times Square for shopping and Broadway to watch the musical “The School of Rock”. We also visited the 9/11 memorial as well and the 9/11 museum where we learnt so much more about this national tragedy. It just goes to show how we should treasure what we have because it can all be lost in one moment.
I am grateful to my fellow classmates for making this trip so much better and to Mrs. Ahl and Ms. Guyo for all the time they spent planning this trip for us, taking care of us, and helping us prepare for the conference in the MUN class during enrichment.
This is my second year in MUN and I will most likely continue in the Diploma Program. I would highly recommend MUN to anyone who is looking for ways to improve their analytical, creative or presentation skills. This experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it’s not something you should pass up on.
