An amalgamation of the alluring, the absurd, the abstract, and the thought-provoking
This week the DP students held their annual Arts Showcase. All their hard work culminated in a wonderful arrangement of photographs, sculptures, and paintings. Sketches, portraits, and even clothing designs were seen throughout the carefully arranged exhibition. Each student explored a leading motif that became paramount to each of their artworks.
Naomi A. hopes that her exhibition will raise awareness for socio-economic and environmental concerns, among which are beauty ideals, asylum seekers, acts of violence, abusive behaviour as well as discrimination. One of her artworks, Concealed Poison, was about alcohol, contrasting the glamour of drinking with the reality of substance abuse.
Sofia E. explained that her exhibition is a means of self-expression, providing solace for her thoughts and emotions. She focussed on the struggles of anxiety and she used the poetry of Sylvia Plath as inspiration for one of her works, Grey.
Raphaelle delved into realism in her artwork, although initially she was quite interested in surrealism at first. She produced water colours of boats and and flowers.
Afnan’s art dealt with issues of women’s rights and included a powerful installation with a mini abaya -the traditional clothing that women in some parts of the world wear when they appear in public.
One of the feature’s of Nicholas S. exhibition was a great photo of ‘red smoke’ that was similar to one he won the QQ film competition with. He also used his artistic talents on a pair of running shoes.
Sofia W focused on the pain and misconceptions of migraines. A centre point of her exhibition was a brain going round on a record player.
Philip created images of Darth Vader as well as using photo shop to manipulate other images.
Nicoleta experimented with facial expressions – from the happy to the sad to the scary.
Marko featured designs with precision that showed he is heading towards a career as an architect.
The students explored compelling themes and motifs, seeking not only realise their imaginative and technical skill, but also to produce something that is appreciated for its substance, beauty, and emotional power.
All students agreed that without the support of their art teacher, Ms Turner, this would not have been possible. Art is a challenging IB subject that really gives students a chance to express themselves. The DP Art students should truly be pleased with their hard work and accomplishments. Heartfelt congrats go the DP Arts Department and of course, the students, themselves.
