Interviewing SIS Music Club!

Music is something that people of all ages enjoy, whether it is listened to, created, or performed. For centuries music has been and continues to be paramount to cultures, societies, and communities around the world. One such community is the SIS Music Club – a CAS activity managed by Sophie C., Elise J. and Adam K. in grade 12, who were kind enough to respond to the following questions.

1. What is the goal of Music Club?

Music club allows DP students to have access to a group of people who are passionate about music. Some of us have been involved in making music for quite a while and we have noticed that, at school, there is a lack of community when it comes to music. The goal of Music Club is therefore to connect with people who have an interest in music and allow them to create together.

2. What do you plan to achieve the coming year? Are there any especially important planned activities?

Our goals for the upcoming year include planning Open-Mic Nights within the school, and, hopefully, performing at some public Open-Mic Nights around the city. The PTA at SIS has also encouraged SIS Music Club members to perform at this year’s graduation, as well as the 12th grade dinner.

3. When do you hold meetings and what do you do?

We hold meetings most Friday morning breaks, between 10:30 and 10:55. During these meetings we discuss upcoming projects and musical arrangements.

4. Why did you found the Music Club?

We have founded Music Club because school can sometimes be the only way to get involved with extracurriculars, as language barriers are often encountered by international students living in foreign countries. Last year, we noticed that there were no music-centered school programmes or clubs. We talked to some of our classmates and they also felt that there was a need to create a Music Club at SIS, and so we did.

5. Does the Music Club have a strategy for identifying areas of improvement and implementing those changes?

The club has formally just started, so areas that need improvement are still only surfacing. Right now, the most pressing issue is effective communication, which hopefully can be addressed through our website: https://sismusicclub.blogspot.se.

6. How is the work of Music Club communicated to the public? To members? To sponsors?

We have created a blogspot website where we post announcements and music recording to club members. Non-members are also welcomed to check out our website posts.

7. What challenges do you think may be faced by the Music Club?

The biggest challenge for now is to recruit more club members. As of now, only 12th graders have signed up, but we would love to see 11th graders join as well! We also need time to practice for group performances, which can at times be difficult, especially given our tight schedules.

If you would like to join Music Club, contact either Sophie C. at [email protected] or Elise J. at [email protected]. SIS Music Club is currently only available to DP students as part of their CAS programme.
