SISMUN is Back!
Watch out SIS students, MUN is back yet another year! MUN, also known as Model United Nations, has now become an annual tradition here at SIS and every year we put on our best debate faces, and take part in a full day of conferences resembling those at the United Nations. SISMUN will happen for all students between 6th and 12th grade this Friday! This year, just as last year, SIS will also welcome international students from different schools to take part in the conference. For 6-7 grade, a mini SISMUN will be held in the auditorium in the main building, organised by the 11 graders Felix and Tess. A very exciting theme will be the topic there… Ahead of the event, the Quirky Quibbler met up with Julia V., the secretary of the event, in order fully inform you of the details and prepare your or the day.
What is your role in SISMUN?
I am Secretary General of SISMUN 2018 meaning that my role is to oversee the planning of the conference and ensure that everything runs smoothly on the day.
What is this year’s topic/theme? How is it relevant for today’s society?
This years topic is Challenges to Globalisation. Considering today’s society is more connected than ever before, such a topic is necessary to discuss in order to understand possible repercussions our generation may have to face. With topics ranging from the situation in North Korea to regulating the sharing economy, we hope for delegates to be able to delve into pressing issues and offer creative solutions.
How can students prepare?
On our website, http://www.sismun-scandinavia.com, students can find resources such as country profiles and committee guides to help them prepare for the conference. All students are also expected to write an opening speech presenting their county’s stance on the topic at hand which is great preparation for the conference.
When are the international people arriving? Who are they? How is this year’s MUN different from other years?
This year, over 70 guest students will attend SISMUN. The students are aged 13 – 16 and all attend international schools in countries such as England and France. Something new this year is that guest students can apply for chairing positions. I was happy to see many qualified applicants apply for such positions although we only have 2 guest students who will be joining our secretariat this year.
How many people are involved?
There are approximately 20 students in our DP MUN group who have helped plan and organise this years conference. We have also had much support from the MYP MUN group but most importantly, we have received much help from the school’s management and our supervisor – Ms. Schmidt.
Hopefully, with this added insight, you can all look forward to the day and be extra prepared to take part in the debates. And remember- dress up! Quirky Quibbler will cover the whole day, so check in later for updates. Mark the date, this Friday SISMUN is coming!
