September 9th of this year marked the release date of In Return, a 13-track album from electronic music duo ODESZA (pronounced ‘Odessa’). It is the second full-length LP release from the Seattle-based duo, which consists of members Clayton Knight and Harrison Mills. In a world with countless musical genres and sub-genres – many of which have quite vague sets of characteristics – it is difficult to find one word that would exactly fit the style of this album. Adjectives such as ‘ambient,’ ‘experimental,’ ‘atmospheric’ and ‘chillwave’ could be used as descriptors for ODESZA’s music. In Return consists of a range of tracks that all follow a similar, distinguishable concept, yet maintains enough variety to keep the listener interested. The duo makes interesting use of dreamy-sounding synths and chopped-up vocal samples paired with crunchy, hip-hop drums to create a fantastic mood for the listener. ODESZA also collaborated with vocalists such as Zyra and Shy Girls on tracks like Say My Name, All We Need, and White Lies.
