A snow day was called in Stockholm on November the 21. The weather network claims that snow days are a thing of the past… but are they?
As many may know, a snow day is a day when schools and institutions shut down because of snowfall, or other natural extremes caused by winter weather. There remains a need for snow days, as without them the area is immobilised and many things are paralysed. Travelling systems close, and necessary supplies shut down. It is also an obstacle for medical as well as emergency services. Travelling in snow can be very dangerous whether it be by walk, or by a bus/car. There is a higher risk of skidding and accidents. Snow causes more problems than just being slippery, which in itself is dangerous. Snow puts pressure on buildings and can cause leaks, or freeze electronics. In our current society, the battery of electric cars slows down a little as well, and users are not prepared for that.
Many think that snow days are not necessary. This comes from the fact that we have machinery to remove the snow, online ways of communication, and underground transport method, thanks to the digital revolution Although there have been advances in technology , which have been tested during the covid-19 pandemic, the sudden change would not be as efficient, because how quickly can children and teachers adapt?

After the times of a pandemic, a lot has changed in regards to “Snow Days”, and how they are executed. Before the pandemic, students valued this day off, as they get to relax in the comfort of their homes while bad weather storms outside. However with the rise of the digital revolution and the pandemic, remote learning have become viable alternatives of in-person schooling. Some may say remote learning is more convenient, but there is less of an interactive element compared to traditional in-person learning. In conclusion, remote learning can substitute days off caused by weather, but this can’t substitute for in-person learning.

Snow Days are a positive surprise when you experience one. Snow Days happen due to extreme conditions – related to snow. Typically, a blizzard or a storm causes one. They lead to transport disruptions, whilst increasing children’s happiness as they get a day off to play and have some fun and excitement. They are a positive experience, which psychologically uplifts children and relieves them from school for a day to enjoy some quality rest. As many others do agree, they were crucial in maintaining an uplifting work-life balance, yet with new “cutting-edge” times, technology has overtaken education, allowing learning to take place remotely. The cancellation of snow days and a temporary shift to remote learning will have a small yet noticeable impact on children’s’ happiness, giving them less time to rest and won’t give them the small pleasures of winter as their predecessors experienced.

As we are gaining the ability to connect more online in the light of the Digital Revolution, our social connections are starting to drift apart. The COVID-19 pandemic led to all classes becoming remote and online, however that also meant students began missing out on just getting to be a kid and enjoying some of the true joys of life. Snow days have always been a beloved day that students look forward to; it has always been a spontaneous treat to allow them to celebrate the winter whether that meant having snowball fights, sledging or enjoying some hot chocolate. However, one by one, schools are removing snow days with the new option of having online lessons being available. The past few years have been stress upon stress for students. Statistically speaking, due to global warming, snow days have become very uncommon. Just think! The last severe snow day in Stockholm was 2016. So why not give students a rare treat every once in a while to brighten up their day?
