Inspirational Poetry – Amanda-Bell My Old Dog

Grade 10 students have been inspired by the poetry of some famous poets. They have created beautiful poetry of their own. Over the next few weeks, we will publish the poems along with the titles of the poems that inspired them.

Amanda-Bell My Old Dog

Structure inspired by “Hope” is a Thing with Feathers- Emily Dickinson

Writing inspired by Mid-Term Break- Seamus Heaney

It’s been days since we last saw her –

Calling out for hours hoping to hear her call back –

After days with noise all round we heard –

We heard her – calling back-

The first to see – my father – then me –

To follow was my mother then one brother then the other –

It was a dreadful site to see

The wounds awful and maggoty I shuddered in horror-

She was put down, her in a box we left the vet –

As we left it was as if the world didn’t make a sound –

Cold – numb – and tired,

We buried her – deep in the ground.
