Inspirational Poetry – Always Looked at but Never Read

Grade 10 students have been inspired by the poetry of some famous poets to create beautiful poetry of their own. We continue to publish the poems along with the titles of the poems that inspired them.

Always Looked at but Never Read

Inspired by “Not Waving but Drowning” by Stevie Smith

Her spine was as stiff as it was

On her first day on the shelf

The book lay unopened

Always looked at but never read

Day after day, week after week

A hand would reach out into the shelf

And pick out one of the other books

All of them but herself

Some glanced at me

(Some even glimpsed the title)

But my pages had been left untouched all my life

And always looked at but never read
