Inspirational Poetry – Not Smiling but Sinking

Grade 10 students have been inspired by the poetry of some famous poets to create beautiful poetry of their own. Over the next couple of weeks, we will publish the poems along with the titles of the poems that inspired them.

Not Smiling but Sinking

Inspired by: ‘Not Waving but Drowning’ by Stevie Smith

Unnoticed in the crowd,

He walked with tears, his voice not loud.

His laughter, a costume, his pain concealed,

A silent plea, his heart contained.

Smiles exchanged, yet none could see,

His desire to be depression free.

His appearance and words deceiving,

Hiding the sadness that grew inside.

He wasn’t smiling but rather sinking,

Not happy, but frowning deep inside.

Beneath the surface, struggling to break free,

Longing for someone to see past the tide.
