Inspirational Poetry – Because I could not stop for Time

Grade 10 students have been inspired by the poetry of some famous poets to create beautiful poetry of their own. We continue to publish the poems along with the titles of the poems that inspired them.

Because I could not stop for Time

Inspired by ‘Because I could not stop for Death’ by Emily Dickinson

Because I could not stop for Time –

It stopped for me –

The race held but just a lane –

And a break from reality.

We fastly paced – It knew my fear

And I tried to hide

My way of going

From Its curiosity –

We passed the fragments, where memories layed

At the start – in the beginning

We passed a shortcut –

We warned the people who took it –

Or rather – they warned us –

The birds stay still and with me –

For only the sound, my feet –

My eyes – only staring –

We paused before a beach that seemed

The only thing moving with me –

The water drying out

The sand – on the beach –

Since then – ‘tis hours – and yet

Feels longer than forever

I saw the birds’ wings

Were going towards the gun –
