In March, SIS students, grade 6-9, had a language fair. They created posters, presentations, and made food relating to the different languages and countries of those languages taught in the school.
Swedish B students gave presentations about famous Swedes and Swedish events, and they spoke about how they were connected to Sweden and their significance. There were presentations on Swedish food and traditions, and there were some presentations that were accompanied by quizzes or quiz games with a candy prize. Other students gave presentations in Swedish on significant Swedish figures.
In the French B rooms there were a mix of presentations and activities. There was a “Draw the Eiffel Tower” activity, a presentation on Crème Brûlée with a recipe, and there was a presentation on a popular French game called Loup Garou. There were also games, like a French history game and a game where you rank various French foods.
In the Spanish B rooms there were posters about Spanish celebrations, food, and dances. There were also posters and presentations on Spanish monuments and famous buildings. When asked, the students in these rooms said that the fair was “very fun”.
The EAL students represented many different countries, cultures, and languages. Students brought in food from their home countries and had posters about the food written in their original language. Maria S. brought in Tinginys, a Lithuanian dessert, similar to chocolate salami, which is typically made with biscuits or crackers, cocoa, butter, sugar, and solidified milk. The direct translation of Tinginys is lazy, as it is easy to make.
Finally, in the Aula there were four tables of food, two of the tables had food from various Spanish speaking countries. One had Swedish food, and another had French food. There was also a continuous flow of presentations being shown on the big screen, slide after slide on various Spanish, French, and Swedish foods., Yena C. thought it was “great that we’re in a large area all together this year.” And Annabel A. stated that the language fair was “hectic but fun.”
All in all the language fair was a great afternoon with a wonderful atmosphere and food, the presentations were informative, and it was very interesting to see the students’ capabilities in another language!
