As this new year just started, Ms Flint organised the first Open Mic event. It was set up in the atrium, with a few chairs placed towards the stage. A group of around 30 students gathered around and by the time everyone was seated, the MC, Clara, introduced the event.
First up was Juel, whose beautiful rendition of “Stay with Elle” on the Piano had the crowd silent, growing into a thunderous applause for her performance.
Following this were several other amazing music performances, such as Lulu’s rendition of “Creep” by Radiohead, a duet for the song “Someday,” and one that caught the eyes of many was “The Subway” performed by Mila Roberts on both the guitar and vocals, which was an audience favourite.
Alvin later sang the song “Pull Up”, followed shortly by a short dance to “Gabriela” by Katseye, performed by Lara B..
Near the end, we were treated to several other musical performances, including Clara’s rendition of “Sabotage” by The Beastie Boys and another featuring the Grade 9 and 8 band, composed of Emily, Vir, Yash, Emi, and Liselot, performing a cover of “Yellow” by Coldplay. And to end the open mic, Lulu sang her heart out to “I see red,” followed shortly by a small comedy show by Alvin.
Audience members were very enthusiastic for the first open mic of the year, praising the variety of acts and the supportive environment. Many noted how exciting it was to see their classmates’ hidden talents, and several said they would like many more to occur again.
Ms Flint, the event organiser said, “I was so excited because it was the first one of the year, and you never know what talent you’re going to see. We saw such a variety of acts, such as dancing, improvisation, comedy, amazing music, and live performances. I am really happy with what we had today.”
And do not worry, if you missed this one as, “There will be many more; there will be one at the end of October, and additionally, a Battle of the Bands competition occurring in November, so that will replace the open mic that month,” said Ms Flint.
With that, the first Open Mic of the year came to a close, leaving behind laughter and much applause in the atrium. It set a warm and promising tone for the months ahead, and many are already looking forward to the next edition.
