Reflections On Autumn Break

This past autumn break, SIS students relaxed and recuperated during their class-free week.

Autumn break itself is fairly regular in schools worldwide. A survey I took of ninth graders told me that most of their previous schools had an autumn break. There were, however, a few exceptions in Malaysia, New York, and Rome.

Many students used the break to enjoy favorite pastimes. The ninth graders gave a wide range of their favorite break activities in the survey. Some enjoyed painting and playing guitar, while others liked to watch Netflix and carve pumpkins. When I asked tenth grader Sugar S.  about what his favorite autumn break activity was, he said, “I like to cook delicious Moroccan stews.” The overall favorites among ninth graders, however, tended to be hanging out with friends, relaxing, and traveling.

Traveling was popular during the break. Half of the students who had taken the survey were traveling outside of Stockholm. Some of their destinations were far flung, but others were not; Ijeoma I. went on a fun road trip to Gothenburg.

Halloween festivities were a spooky way to top off students’ autumn break. The Shockholm Halloween parade was a great attraction. Halloween parties were attended as well, as several students enjoyed a halloween party held by the American embassy.

Although autumn break is over, we’re glad to be back in school!
