Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – with joy of learning

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – with joy of learning

Leva G., Guest writer

The Erasmus+ Enrichment group has the job of making students more aware of recycling. Its mission is to reduce waste in the school and make people aware of this important environmental issue. The group is part of a project that involves students from 7 different European countries. Each term over a 4 year period, the students visit one of the countries involved in the project.  This year SIS students are going to Poland. The idea is that the students share ideas and together help make changes that have a positive impact on the environment. The project is funded through  Erasmus+.  This is the EU’s programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. It provides funds for European students to travel and volunteer in other European countries. This is Leva’s account of her experiences as part of this group.

I joined this enrichment group halfway through the school year, and I have noticed how hard it is to get the MYP involved in recycling. They have little enthusiasm towards the topic and it is a struggle to try to bring up the importance of recycling and taking care of out beautiful planet.

Our projects might be on the smaller scale, but through them we are helping our environment little by little. A great example of this is one of our current recycling projects, a Recycling Poster Competition.

Through our own observations we realised that their was not enough recycling bins for both paper, plastic and organics around the school, missing labels for the bins, and peoples lack of interest in recycling during school. We decided to involve the MYP and doing a poster competition, which involves the students creating a poster for either paper, plastic and organics, that the winners will later be displayed on our trip to Poland.

The trip to Poland is part of the Erasmus+ project with 7 other schools. This year the schools travel to Poland for a week.

The group from our school going this year consists of me (Leva.G), Zelda F, Axel Z, Daniel M, Carl, Emelie, Jan, Harry and we are accompanied by Ms. U and Ms. Celino.

By going there we get a chance to meet the rest of this wonderful project, and share with the other schools involved what our own school has been working on in terms of recycling and helping our earth.

I am very exited for the trip as it is a great experience to be able to showcase what our group has been doing, as well as experience the culture in Poland. This trip is important, as it helps unite our ideas and see the faces behind the rest of the project.
