What is there to expect from this event? Prior to the event, students are required to formulate their country’s notion based on research about their presented global issue and their country’s respective views. Under diplomatic conditions, students are exposed to prevalent global issues and expected to “deliver speeches, debate, and negotiate with other delegates using formal parliamentary procedures to discuss these issues and work toward drafting and voting on resolutions.” This year the global topics entails “cyber warfare (DISEC) and opportunities for displaced people in Sub-Saharan Africa (UNHRC).”
You may ask yourself, what is the purpose of MUN day? But here is what some of the committee members have to say about their first experiences with MUN:
It was an enriching experience to step into the role of a delegate, engage in meaningful discussions on global issues, and work towards compromises with countries holding differing perspectives – Chiara. F
I began MUN in the 7th grade as a joke because I found the idea of a debate funny. But I later realised that it was actually very fun – Daksh. P
I joined MUN as a way of developing my leadership and public-speaking skills. MUN has helped me tremendously with this, and has allowed me to develop connections with many – Ryan. X
Ultimately the SISMUN conferences aim to “cultivate a global setting” where students can “implement solutions” and input their suggestions. Students are also able to develop “essential skills” such as public speaking, resolution drafting, but on a more important note, students are more aware of the “wider global context” of various global issues. Undeniably, the SISMUN conference serves as a wonderful opportunity for students to forge meaningful connections and to have fun.
