MUN day has just started and there is already some tension rising between countries. The DISEC committee started off with opening speeches from the Netherlands, Indonesia, Nigeria, North Korea, Sweden, the US, India, China, and South Korea. Canada then made a motion for a moderated caucus about international cooperation on cyber security. Delegates were given 5 minutes of research time, then there were speeches by North Korea, Russia, the US, Indonesia, and China. North Korea then had an inquiry for Canada, who was then given 2 mins of research time to create their response. This was then followed by a back and forth between North Korea and Canada, until finally, North Korea stated that what Canada was saying was an attack on the dignity of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and “We will not dignify with a response”.
I asked the chair of this committee, Chiara F., what she thought of the beginning of MUN day. “I think it’s going well, I think the debate is rolling pretty smoothly, people know what they’re doing, there is some tension between North Korea and Canada, but you know it is kind of expected for a topic which is cyber warfare.”
