The MUN conference started well in 312, with all of the countries saying their opening speeches. Arya R. and Ashwika S. are the chairs of this conference. The topic for this room is Cyber warfare.
Please note, that the opinions in the articles are not actually the official countries but are simulations for Model United Nations.
Here are snippets from these opening speeches;
South Africa: “Cyber warfare is becoming more complex.”
North Korea: “As technology advances, so is the difficulty to be recognised.”
Netherlands: “Cyber warfare is becoming an issue. The world relies too heavily on technology. It is a difficult issue. The Netherlands suggest establishing clear restraints to help the issue.”
Japan: “Cyber security is more important than ever. The delegation of Japan believes that we need to act immediately, so we won’t let lives be lost because of the lack of security.”
Australia: “A lot of our population have received cyber attacks. We are strongly against cyber warfare and an urge for cyber security for all. What other delegates agree with this delegate’s urge to restrain cyber attacks through cyber security?”
Then there was a sub topic change, to what are the ethics of cyber warfare..
Australia: “Australia strongly opposes cyberwarfare as it affects people’s families and their security.”
Japan: “Japan heavily supports the usage of cyber warfare as we have a lot of citizens that use the internet and technology, and believe it brings about lots of advancements.”
After Israel was asked to speak, there is mention of the Israel-Palestine conflict, after the Israeli delegate mentions the want for cyber peace and their perspective against cyber warfare. North Korea took this opportunity to question their want for cyber peace after their use of cyber attacks to go against Palestine. This then sparked interest in South Africa, as the delegate joined the debate and attacked North Korea for calling out Israel.
South Africa : “North Korea has no right to attack Israel for wanting cyber peace, as North Korea has some of the most affluent uses for cyber warfare.”
Japan and South Africa have a long debate, as they go back and forth by contradicting their claims, and calling each other out on their previous actions. North Korea made claims saying that the South Africans are using technology to spy – whilst South Africa negated this. However before North Korea can respond, the debate is cut off, due to time restraints.
What an exciting debate! Keep reading the QQ to find out more interesting highlights!
