Save the Rhinos!

Why did students from SIS join the Global March for Elephants & Rhinos?  Students marched, along with people from a Stockholm group,  Protect the Elephants (Försvarar Elefanterna), from the Thai Embassy to the Chinese Embassy.  They carried placards and handed out leaflets in order to inform the community about animal poaching. These countries were targeted because many of the buyers of products from Rhino horn and elephant tusks come from Thailand and China.

Did you know that one rhino is brutally murdered every 8 hours? They do not deserve to be slaughtered for their horns.  Poachers usually just cut of the horns and leave them to die a painful death. In recent years, the number of these animals has diminished and if we do not protect them, they’ll become extinct. Poaching greatly affects not only the population of rhinos and elephants but also impacts on the countries that depend on these animals for tourism. There are only 3 white rhinos today in Kenya.

The SIS rhino group works to raise awareness of these issues as well as collects money to help protect the rhinos. To create awareness against poaching of animals and protecting the environment, the rhino group has a variety of activities.  They have a youtube animated series that tells the story of rhinos in Africa.

They are also having a Rhino Gala – an evening of entertainment and fun – on the 11th of November.  Look out for information about this and come along to support this great cause.

They will be selling cards, friendship bands and rhino cookies to raise funds for Project Rhino KZN.  If you can’t make it to the gala or just want to donate, you can contribute to their fund raising page.

You can follow the group on Instagram.

We all hope that you can help us to continue spreading  awareness of this issue so that the whole world can be aware of the dangers of animal poaching and the need to protect the environment.
