Tempers out of Control!

Sarah F., SISMUN Press Team Writer

With the first session complete, the Environmental Committee, chaired by Felix B. and Sophie C., came to an agreement to address the topic at hand, “Sustainable Development and Reaching Carbon Zero”. Throughout the debate, many interesting issues were raised by the delegations of Sweden, the United States, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Ukraine, France, the Russian Federation, and the UK. These included: carbon tax (i.e. fossil fuel tax), promoting scientific research in the field of sustainable energy development, and encouraging funding of LEDC’s (less economically developed countries) development sectors by stronger or more economically developed countries.

Chairs of Environmental Committee

When dealing with such a controversial topic, it is not hard to understand that some may lose their tempers. In this particular session, this occurred when the delegate representing France made a bomb threat! It appears as though some of us may be getting ahead of ourselves, although it is nice to see the delegates so engaged.

That aside, the chairs reported that there is a “curious atmosphere” and that “all delegates are excited to learn MUN procedures!” So, it seems as though all is going well and the students are enjoying SISMUN so far. In the words of the chairs, our delegates are “young, excellent public speakers” and with any luck, they will be our next world leaders.
