To Grow Up in a Gender Stereotyped Society

Molly L. is a guest writer this week. Her area of interest is male and female stereotypes.

As teenagers growing up, we encounter multiple stereotypes of men and women in our society. We have created roles for women and men to show what they can and can’t do. It is important that we question these stereotypes so that young adults or children feel comfortable challenging these gender stereotypes. For instance, did you know that on average, women spend 2.3 hours a day on house tasks, and men spend 1.4 hours? The infographic below discusses stereotypes for women and men and why they need to change. I created it as part of my Grade 10 MYP Personal Project at Stockholm International School. The aim is to give an overview of some of the common stereotypes and raise awareness about them in order to benefit our society. You may be surprised by some of the information, so take a look! You can also give your opinion by answering this short survey.
