Book in Many Languages – Multilingual books wanted

The grade 10 EAL is organising a collection of multilingual books to add to the Norra Latin library. Akira I. spoke to our librarian, Ms Pongo, about why we need books in many languages

The Current situation

The current situation in the library is sad. There are only a few non-English books available in the middle school.  There are only a few languages and a few books in each language. As there are so few multilingual books available in the library, this book shelf is half empty.  There are many non-English books in the primary school library, but not as many in the middle school library.

Why do we need Multilingual books?

The library and students need multilingual books. Students should be reading their mother language books so that they develop their mother language skills. Students in SIS are from different countries and students speak a wide range of languages. However, the language of the  school is English and we speak English with other students and teachers. This means that there fewer opportunities for students to speak their mother language. To increase the opportunities for students to keep on learning and developing their other languages the school needs to have many multilingual books for the students to read.  We really wish to encourage students to develop their mother-tongue skills as we know how important it is to have multi-language skills in an international school environment.

How you can Help?

By donating your non-English books to the library. We would like books that are for middle/upper school. Maybe you have some books at home that you no longer need or maybe you can buy some extra books when you are back in your home country during break.

How to donate

Please bring donations to the library on the 4th floor of Norra Latin. We are particularly interested in books for secondary school students.
