The 2024 Summer Olympics – officially the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad – have drawn to a close. They took place in Paris, France, starting on July 26th and ending on August 11th after showcasing incredible athletic triumph across 32 different sports. In total, 206 National Olympic Committees participated, including the Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) and the Refugee Olympic Team (EOR).
Sweden landed a notable 6th place out of 84 countries, with four gold, four silver, and three bronze medals. It is worth highlighting the gold medalists in Sweden, including Armand Duplantis, David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig, and Sarah Sjöström.
Duplantis landed a gold medal and a new world record for the Men’s Pole Vault after clearing an impressive 6.25m on August 5th. Further, on August 10th, Åhman, and Hellvig scored the first-ever gold medal for Sweden in beach volleyball at the Olympic games. The Swedish athletes won against the German team, 2-0 in straight sets, thereby claiming victory. Finally, Sarah Sjöström won gold in the 50m and 100m Women’s Freestyle event with a time of 23.71s and 52.16s respectively.
Sweden had set a target of ten medals for Paris 2024 and surpassed that goal by winning 11 – two more medals than at the previous Olympic Games in Tokyo. The Swedish Olympic Committee has stated that the long-term aim for the Swedish Olympic Team will be to fight for 20 medals at the Olympic Summer Games 2028. This was a great year for the Swedish Olympic Team, and hopefully, they will continue to compete at this level at the next Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles, California.
