DISEC 7, the seventh Disarmament and International Security Committee in room 328, has had a productive first period of debating. Initially starting with a “Does Pineapple Belong on Pizza?” icebreaker, followed by Opening speeches, and finally a moderated caucus on the subtopic of ‘Satellite Weapons’ motioned by the delegate of Russia, the committee session has proved to be extremely successful in the eyes of Tavai B., the main chair, and Mr Snell, the teacher present in the room.
During this short hour of debate, much has happened, ultimately leading to two delegates being on the punishment list. The chair exclaimed that “hopefully they’ll be able to get themselves off the punishment list by that time [the end of the day], but it’s not looking too good for certain delegates” who are gaming and overusing AI. The delegates have yet to vote on what the students will have to do, as in this committee, they follow democracy, and want more engagement from the delegates.
Mr Snell, who came a little bit late to the classroom, but quickly got “caught up to speed, and things are really great. We’ve got a fantastic chair, the whole chair group is amazing”. He gave extremely positive feedback on the students who are actively participating, with a few exceptions of indiscreet individuals who are actively playing video games. Mr Snell added that “Everyone is taking it seriously and doing a great job. It’s great being a fly on the wall and just observing and taking it all in”.
It is rare to see such engagement on this day, as previously, MUN has been a dreaded event, yet this year, the chair’s entertainment has allowed this event to finally gain the popularity it deserves. There is so little negative feedback to give as they are so mature and responsible; his only wish has been to put the gamer “on the spot” and reduce the usage of AI, which the delegate of South Korea has been using in an academically dishonest manner.
Mr Snell showed great disappointment as he left the room and handed the group over to Mr Ferguson, who will be keeping an eye on them for the remainder of period 3. Congratulations, students of DISEC 7, you made the teachers of SIS and the Quirky Quibbler team proud. Keep up the good work!
