If you ever visit London and find yourself walking through the chaos of Borough Market, there’s one thing you can’t miss: the famous chocolate-covered strawberries. In theory, it sounds very simple. No big deal, right? Well… not exactly.
The first thing you’ll notice is the queue. Every day the market is open, people line up for them. Luckily, the workers are efficient, so the wait is usually around five minutes. While waiting, you’ll see bright red strawberries packed into cups and covered in melted chocolate right in front of you.
The strawberries themselves are fresh, sweet, and occasionally slightly tangy. The other key component is the melted Belgian milk chocolate. It’s clearly good quality, not just a basic sugary coating. When poured over the cold fruit, it begins to harden slightly, creating a satisfying texture while also making it a bit less messy.
That said, they’re not cheap. A cup costs around £8.50–£9.50 (about 105–120 SEK). You’re paying as much for the experience as for the strawberries. The line can also be longer compared to other stalls in the market, which shows how popular they are.
One downside is that it can get messy. The chocolate tends to drip down the sides of the cup, so it’s a good idea to grab extra napkins unless you want sticky hands.
So, are they worth the hype?
Honestly, as a one-time experience, yes. It’s not just about the strawberries, but about being in one of London’s most well-known food markets, surrounded by noise, people, and different food smells, while eating something simple but well made.
If you go, don’t expect just a quick snack. You’ll probably end up staying longer, since there’s a lot to see around the market and can be quite fun to stroll around.
Rating: 4/5, worth trying at least once.
