On the 24th of October, students of SIS arrived at school wearing their beautiful and intricate traditional attire. This day not only marked the beginning of Autumn break, it also marked a moment of appreciation of the multiculturalism our school fosters. United Nations Day celebrates the global unity and cultural diversity that blooms among our community.
During the beginning of school, for the first two periods, students honoured their countries proudly and walked the UN Parade. Despite the slightly rainy weather, pupils hoisted their flags one alongside another and showed respect, appreciation and harmony. Furthermore, many national anthems were played during the walk and at the end a very heart-warming speech was given by our director, Ms. Léon. We also can’t forget the most important part! The amazing and stunning ethnic attire people wore! Although it was hard to see during the parade itself as the students were wearing jackets, in school you could see the incredible clothes students wore as they walked in the halls.
However this day was also a part of Spirit Week which meant there was also a House competition! The House Leadership Committee paid a visit to all classes and counted the amount of students who participated in UN Day by dressing up. In the end the scores were: Air House – 29pts, Earth House – 24pts, Water House – 23pts, and Fire House – 25pts. Making Air House the winner, congratulations!
In the end, not only did this day emphasise the importance of diversity and unity. It also provided a place for students to connect with their peers and enjoy being a part of a multicultural community.
