Materialists, directed by Celine Song, had its premiere on the 13th of June 2025, and in its first months grossed about $100 million worldwide.
It is a movie about a girl named Lucy in New York, a successful matchmaker who helps wealthy people find love. As she is finding the perfect matches for others, she gets into a love triangle between her wealthy client and her ex-boyfriend.
This idea could have made the story exciting, but as it happened quite early in the movie, it turned out to be very predictable. We advise skipping the trailer before seeing the movie, as it spoils most of the plot. After watching it, the storyline seemed clear, and we could predict what was going to happen next, as there weren’t any shocking plot twists that would hook the audience.
Even though the storyline is simple, the aesthetic of the movie was very appealing. The aesthetic is mostly shown from the main character Lucy’s point of view. We get to follow her journey with the trips to restaurants, luxurious apartments, and the vibrant city of New York. The characters wear stylish clothes, which portray their lavish lifestyle. The featured actors Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans also do a good job bringing their characters to life. Their acting seems natural and their interactions are genuine. There are some interesting moments where the characters reflect upon their relationships, values, and the logic behind their decisions, which made us think about whether we agree and feel the same.
We are both big fans of rom-coms, especially the ones from the 2000s like “10 Things I Hate About You”, “How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days”, “27 Dresses”, and many more. They are usually pretty predictable, but we felt that this was, unfortunately, particularly obvious. Somehow, we expected more from this rom-com based on the past movies that we’ve watched. It was enjoyable, but not very memorable.
Overall, we give Materialists a score of 6 out of 10. It is a decent movie, but we hoped for a more exciting story and a bigger plot twist from a rom-com made in 2025. It did not beat the iconic 10 Things I Hate About You, which is an all-time favourite of ours. It was an easy watch and went by quickly. It would be a great choice for a hangout when you have nothing else to watch.
