Having been involved from 2013 to 2019 and returning in 2023, Ms.Schmidt has great experience in the organization process of the conference. She emphasizes that students are the ones responsible for hosting the event, and everything is largely also led by themselves.
The process of choosing the next year’s two committees starts right after the annual SISMUN conference in January, when the member board for the year has been selected.
While the main MUN conference is aimed at grades 8 to 12, mini MUN debates are organized for the younger students to get familiar with the process of debating.
This year, SIS will also be welcoming guests from three neighboring schools in the Stockholm region, as well as students from a Danish school. It’s a chance for the students to connect, learn, and collaborate with other peers through debating about topics that matter in today’s world.
Understandably, not everyone may find MUN debates interesting or exciting at first; however, it’s more than just discussing. Through this experience, we gain many useful skills useful in studies and in real-life situations. Ms Schmidt, being also a geography teacher, suggests that, “You learn to present a point of view that you may not necessarily believe in yourself, which helps in exam situations when you have to give different perspectives on things, you might not believe in yourself.” She states, “negotiating, collaborating, researching, and public speaking are important skills.” Also, Ms Schmidt explains that, “we gain an awareness of current global events, possible conflicts, and what could be done to solve these.” She added that it makes us wonder, “How can we all work together to solve the issues of the 21st century?”
